Check Your Motorcycle Insurance

Call your insurance agent to find out whether your regular policy covers a motorcycle during transport. Be sure to ask potential transporters lots of questions, including about their standard insurance coverage and whether additional coverage is available.

Choose A Motorcycle Transport Trailer Style

There are two basic types of transport trailers: open motorcycle trailers and closed motorcycle trailers. Choose an open carrier if you need your motorcycle shipped quickly and are only shipping a few hundred miles. Open transport trailers are often a less expensive option. Closed trailers protect a motorcycle from the weather and are less susceptible to theft. You may need to be more flexible when shipping a motorcycle via closed transport. Because many motorcycles are shipped on the same trailer, the shipper will schedule trucks when the trailer is full. Choose a closed trailer if the motorcycle is particularly valuable or vulnerable to the elements.

Choose A Motorcycle Carrier

Decide whether you want an open or enclosed motorcycle trailer, and whether crating the motorcycle is required. Make sure your carrier is licensesed to transport motorcycles. Ask to see a copy of the shipper’s contract and note any special provisions for motorcycles.

Prepare Your Motorcycle

Ask your carrier whether they require you to disconnect the battery or drain the fuel tank. Have a mechanic do a thorough inspection and note any mechanical or electrical problems. Take photographs of the motorcycle, especially of any existing scratches, dings, or dents. These will be invaluable if you do have to file an insurance claim. Finally, carefully read over the shipping contract and any other paperwork your shipper provides. These documents will help you know what to expect from your shipper, which payment methods they accept, and when the motorcycle will be delivered.
